Helen Weinman has turned her longtime passion for quilting and fabrics into a multi-faceted business, wearing the hats of shop owner, instructor, designer of both patterns and fabrics, author and consultant to quilt shops! Owning a quilt shop for over 20 years has given her keen insight as to what elements in design are needed to make a stunning quilt. Overall, Helen has earned a reputation for being a strong motivator, inspiring others to achieve success, whether one is a hobbyist or the owner of a quilting business.
Living on Cape Cod, Helen has always been drawn to seaside themes in her quilting. A clear blue and white palette with a touch of yellow and green are the basis for her collection BY THE SEA, a natural choice of those living on the Cape and anyone who has visited the seashore or dreamed of visiting the seashore.
She has owned and operated Heartbeat Quilts, a large quilt shop in Hyannis, Massachusetts. on Cape Cod, since 1986. Helen began her retail business at home, with seven bolts of fabric! Since then, Heartbeat Quilts has grown to house over 9000 bolts of fabric, more than 500 book titles, hundreds of kits and gift items in 5500 square feet. In recent years, a thriving online store and mail-order business has been successfully integrated with the brick and mortar store. She enjoys helping her customers daily in selecting fabrics for their heirlooms, and for 15 years, she's taught a class entitled "How to Choose Fabric for a Quilt," taking students beyond just color selection.
Helen's quilting skills have also been showcased in magazines such as The Quilter and McCalls's Quilting magazines, and in her first quilt book Quilts: Color By Number designed for children ages 6-12 so they can learn about color choices. Her upcoming book will focus on the same topic, but is geared to adults. She also shares her knowledge of quilting through guild lectures throughout New England, where her keen sense of humor makes her a popular speaker. She only shows finished quilts, never using slides to make her point!
