Wool Dyeing Tips
Among our many new wool products is a variety
that is “PFD”, or prepared for dyeing. It’s easy to custom-color
your wool fabric - with Kool-Aid® powdered drink mix!
PLEASE NOTE: As with any dyeing technique, we
strongly suggest that you TEST the following tips on sample fabric, to
determine the end results before you begin your actual project.
- First, be sure to use the unsweetened type.
Mix the powder in a large non-food pot with enough HOT water to cover
the piece you are dyeing. You might need several packets of the
Kool-Aid, depending on the desired color intensity. The high acidic
content of the Kool-Aid is generally enough to permanently color the
fabric - no vinegar or salt is needed.
- Let wool sit undisturbed until it has achieved the
desired color. Maintain the water temperature by placing the pot on
the stove on the lowest setting. The pot should not boil, or even
simmer, but just keep the water hot. Remove fabric from the pot,
squeeze out excess water and air dry.
- To over-dye a second color, repeat the process. Try
tying the wool in various spots to create special effects. Test small
pieces each step of the way to assure the desired results.
In addition, there are many books, websites &
other resources describing ways to dye your wools, including commercial
dyes. |
