Creating with the Experts

With all the buzz about our growing collection of WOOL blend fabrics, we’ve enlisted the help of wool expert Janet Brandt to bring you more great tips for creating with wool. Try these, along with our original wool tips in Fun & Features, and you’ll be a wool expert in no time, too! These are some of Janet’s favorite tips & techniques...
  • Temporary spray adhesive is a great aid in the planning stages of a wool appliqué project. The appliqué pieces can be repositioned until you get the placement just right. Everything stays in place while you stitch by hand or machine, without the hassle of pins!
  • Marcus Fabrics HAND DYED WOOLS are “ready for the needle” when you buy them, so there is no need to pre-wash. However, if you prefer to vary the textures from a single piece of wool, divide it into four pieces, leaving one piece as-is. Wash the other three pieces. Then remove one of the three washed pieces and wash the remaining two again. Finally, wash one piece a third time. You will now have the same color wool with four very subtle differences in weight and textures.
  • The ¼” pre-cut WOOL STRIPS are great for more than just rug hooking – try them for fringe, tassels and braid on a variety of projects, from quilts to fashion to home décor.
  • When cutting large quantities of wool circles for a penny rug project, simply rotary cut appropriate sized squares first (for example, cut 4" square to make a 4" circle), then just cut the circles freehand by rounding off the corners.
