Pansies & Ivy Flanged Pillow
by Vandarra Robbins

Next in our series is a simple but elegant ivy print flanged pillow, accented with the contrasting purple pansy print. The flat pillow form does double duty as comfy a seat cushion as well as a standard decorative pillow, whether you keep it in your sewing area or any other room in your home. For a creative variation, sew up another quilt block for the center of the pillow.

NOTE:
Instructions are for a finished 16” square pillow. Adjust measurements for pillows of different sizes. All seams are ½” unless otherwise noted.

R13 Pansies & Ivy
  • T460-114W (ivy print) - 1 yard
  • 1031-177D (purple pansy) - ¼ yard
  • 16” square pillow form or foam rubber
Cutting Guide
  • 1 - 21” x 21” pillow front (ivy)
  • 1 - 21” x 18” pillow back underlap (ivy)
  • 1 - 21” x 10” pillow back overlap (ivy)
  • 1 - 3” X 69” front banding (pansy)

Instructions
  1. Finish one 21” edge of both the back overlap and underlap pieces with a 1” hem.
  2. Press under ¼” on each long edge of banding.
  3. Lightly mark a line 2½” in from all sides of the pillow front. This is the starting line for the band placement.
  4. Pin band around perimeter of pillow front. Start in the center so that the end of the band will not be at a corner. (View 1)
  5. Miter each corner by folding band back on itself and pressing. Stitch on the diagonal formed when the miter was pressed. Stitch through to the pillow front. Trim and press seams before proceeding to the next corner. Once a miter is formed, re-pin band so that it will remain even.
  6. When returning to the center trim off excess, leaving a ½” seam allowance. Sew a seam to join the two ends of the band, right sides together.
  7. Topstitch the band down on the inner edge only, pivoting at the corners.
  8. With right sides together, pin the unfinished edge of the overlap to the pillow front. Baste around the three sides. (View 2)
  9. Pin underlap to the other front edge, right sides together. Baste around the three sides.
  10. Sew completely around the basted pillow. Trim seams.
  11. Turn right side out and press.
  12. Topstitch the outer edge of the pillow through all thicknesses.
  13. Topstitch the outer edge of the flange through all thicknesses. Insert the pillow form.
