Overdyeing 101

Ever wish you could custom-color a print for a special project? It's no surprise, as quilting the many varied methods available today to custom color fabrics, from textile pens to powdered drink mix. It's fun and easy to do, and the new DBW- DECORATIVE BLACK & WHITES are the perfect choice for a crash course in fabric overdyeing. Now, you can be the designer, creating the exact color you want in any one of these artistic, high-contrast fabric designs!

Here, we've experimented a bit with classic RIT Dye to transform black and white fabrics into a colorful grouping. It only takes a few easy steps**:

** Refer to the dye package instructions for more complete instructions and additional tips.

  1. Dissolve the dye powder in hot water; stir until dissolved.
  1. Immerse fabric into the dye, so that the dye covers the fabric completely, or continually stir the fabric for complete and even color coverage. Leave fabric immersed until the desired shading is achieved (remember that the actual color will appear lighter once the fabric is dry.)
  1. Remove fabric from dye, squeezing out the excess water. Rinse fabric under cool running water until the water runs clear and free of color. Squeeze out excess water and air dry or machine dry with like colors.
