| Cutting
Guide: (Refer to Diagram 1 for position reference) |
- Cut (376) 3-1/2" squares light
NOTE: You can cut fifty-five 3-1/2: squares from each half
yard piece of fabric and seventy-seven 3 1/2" squares
from each 3/4 yard piece of fabric.
- Cut (188) 3-1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangles dark blue
or red
NOTE: You can cut twenty-four 3-1/2" x 6-1/2"
rectangles from each 1/2 yard piece of fabric.
- Cut (3) 9-1/2" x width of the blue fabric strips,
#F753-199T for the center position
- Cut (2) 6-1/2" x width of the blue fabric strips, #
F742-199T, for position 2
- Cut (2) 6-1/2" x width of the blue fabric strips, #
F745-199T, for position 3
- Cut (2) 6-1/2" x width of the blue fabric strips,
#F751-199T, for positions 4 and 5
- Cut (7) 2-1/2" x width of the fabric strips selected
for the binding
|
- Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong
side of each light 3-1/2" square. Diagram 2
|
 |
- Lay a light 3 1/2" square right sides
together on a 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" dark rectangle
aligning 3 raw edges, as shown in Diagram 3.
- Stitch on the drawn diagonal line. Trim the excess fabric
¼" from the stitched line.
- Press the triangle open.
|
 |
- Lay a second light 3-1/2" square on the opposite side
of the rectangle, matching the light fabric, if you choose.
NOTE: Pay attention to the placement of the square and the
drawn diagonal line by referring to Diagram 4.
- Stitch on the drawn diagonal line. Trim the excess fabric
¼" from the stitched line. Press.
- Make 188 Flying Geese units. Trim them to measure
3-1/2" x 6-1/2".
- Stitch the Flying Geese units into the following lengths.
- Two lengths of 26 Flying Geese units each
- One length of 22 Flying Geese units
- Two lengths of 20 Flying Geese units each
- Three lengths of 18 Flying Geese units each
- Two lengths of 10 Flying Geese units each
- Stitch the three 9-1/2" center strips together end to
end. Trim the strip to approximately 95" long.
- Stitch two 6-1/2" matching strips together end to
end. Make 2 pieced strips this length one of fabric
F745-199T and one of fabric F742-199T. Trim each to measure
approximately 6-1/2" x 65" for positions 2 and 3
and 6-1/2" x 15" for positions 6 and 7.

 |
Assembly: |
- Mark the middle of the 9-1/2" strip and find the
middle of a 26 Flying Geese unit strip.
- Pin the Flying Geese strip to one long side of the 9
1/2" strip, starting at the center and working you way
to the end of the strip or geese whichever comes first.
- NOTE: We will be attaching all Flying Geese strips to
plain strips using this method. That is, start by pinning
the strips together from the center point of each strip to
the end in both directions. Then stitch the strips together.
Press. The lengths will not match. We will square the quilt
when we get all the strips in place.
- Stitch the second 26 unit Flying Geese strip to the other
long side of the 9 1/2" center strip.
- Next stitch the 6 1/2" pieced strips to each
remaining sides of the 26 unit Flying Geese strip. Start by
pinning from the center point out in both directions.
- Next stitch the 18 unit Flying Geese strips to the
remaining sides of the 6 1/2" pieced strips.
- Next stitch one 6 1/2" F751-199T x length of fabric
strip to each remaining long sides of the 18 unit Flying
Geese strips.
- Next stitch the 10 unit Flying Geese strips to the
remaining sides of the F751-199T strip.
- Lastly add the 6 1/2" x 15" fabric strips to the
long sides of the 10 unit Flying Geese strip.
I
know this looks a mess, but now you will use your floor and
square rulers and square the fabric to measure 54-1/2"
square. Refer to Diagram 5 and draw the square in chalk
first. It was easier to start with the large square ruler on
the longest blue fabric. When you are comfortable with the
drawn line trim the square.
- Starting with any side and pin the remaining 18 unit
Flying Geese strip to the quilt center, pinning first then
stitching. Remember you are now sewing on the bias and it
requires care.
- Next add a 20 unit Flying Geese strip to the quilt center,
adding the border going counter clockwise around the quilt,
pin then stitch.
- Next add the remaining 20 unit Flying Geese strip in the
same manner. Then stitch the last 22 unit Flying Geese strip
to complete the top.
|
Finishing: |
Layer
the quilt top with the batting and backing. Baste and quilt
as desired
- Join the seven 2 1/2" strips end to end to make a
continuous binding strip. Bind the quilt and add a label.
