Need a great gift with a bit of masculine appeal? "Blueberry
Buckle" is an ultra-easy lap size quilt by Sue Pickering. It
resembles a log cabin quilt, and like any log cabin design, it is
based on a block that is half-light and half dark with a center
square of contrasting fabric. But instead of endless piecing of
strips going around the center square, it is a 5" finished
triangle square with a top stitched and fringed accent piece. |
You'll Need:
3/4 yard of light beige for accent squares and
border
9 or more fat quarters of assorted light blue prints
9 or more fat quarters of assorted dark blue prints
1/2 yard blue and white stripe for binding |
Assembly:
- From the light beige fabric cut ninety-six
2" squares. Set aside remaining beige fabric.
- From the 9 assorted light fabrics cut two
strips 6" X 22". Re-cut into 6" squares. You will
have 54 squares. Repeat with the 9 assorted dark blue fabrics.
Total squares will be 108.
- Mark the back of the light blue squares with a
diagonal line from point to point.
- Pair each light blue fabric with a dark blue
fabric and place them with right sides together. Now sew
1/4" on each side of the drawn line. Cut on the drawn line
and iron the triangle square open, with the seams ironed toward
the dark side.
- Carefully trim each tri-square to 5-1/2".
- Center the beige square and top stitch in place
1/4" from the edge. Gently pull a few threads from each
side of the square to make a fringe.
- Now the really fun part! On a design wall, the
floor or a large bed experiment with arranging your blocks.
Warning, this can be addictive! I chose a simple arrangement of
four blocks with the light blue sides forming a larger square.
They were then sewn together in four by eight rows. (You will
have some extra blocks.)
- From the remaining beige accent fabric cut six
2-1/2" strips. Measure the length of your top and piece
strips together to that length and join to the sides of the top.
Repeat for the top and bottom borders.
- This quilt has straight binding; cut 3"
wide and folded double. The finished size is approximately
65" X 45". Hand or machine quilt as desired.
