Make it with Marcus Fabrics

Wool Sewing Bag
by Janet Carija Brandt

Fiber artist Janet Brandt created this chic little sewing carryall, crafted of Marcus Fabrics wools. Combining fashion with function, it's sure to be a hit for sewers and quilters, keeping those essential tools close at hand – it even has a removable pincushion! This is Part 1 of Janet's new four-part series, focusing on fabulous fashion accessories, so if you enjoyed her recent series on creative journals, be sure to stay tuned through the holiday season and beyond for great designs and inspiration.

You'll Need:
  • 1/2 yard black wool
  • 4 of coordinating wools, 1 each of blue, green, gold and red (from folded bundles)
  • Heavy-duty rubber bands (size #31)
  • 2 yards of 1/4" black grosgrain ribbon
  • 1 yard of 3/4" satin ribbon

PINCUSHION

Cut 1 strip 1-1/4" x 27" from each color of wool. Choose your center color and cut 10" from that strip. Tightly roll the 10" piece for the core of the pin cushion. Add the other strips, rolling as tight as possible and ending with the remaining piece of the core color. Bind the cushion with 1 or 2 rubber bands. Place your cushion in an old nylon stocking and machine wash and dry several times until the wool felts into a solid ball. Remove rubber bands. You can slip stitch the end of the outer strip to the cushion if necessary.

Cut one circle from the base pattern, to match the color of the outside of your pincushion. Slipstitch the pincushion to the center of this circle.

SEWING BAG

From black wool cut 1 piece 8" x 22" and 1 base.
From gold wool cut 1 piece 4" x 22" for inside pocket
From blue wool cut 6 of the small tongue patterns
From the red and green wool cut 3 of the large tongue patterns in each color

Arrange tongue pieces on the black wool. Leave 1/2" at the bottom and 1/4" at each end. Stitch in place using a hand or machine buttonhole stitch.

On the backside of the black wool, place the gold pocket piece along the bottom edge leaving 3/8" free. With black thread in the bobbin, stitch the bottom edge of the pocket to the black wool. Turn piece over and stitch in between every other tongue to form the pockets on the inside.

Cut 2, 12" pieces of the satin ribbon. Fold under 1/2" on each end of each piece and press. Apply to inside top edge (gold pocket side) of the black wool. Stitch as close to the top and bottoms edges of the ribbon as possible. Cut a small slit in black wool, in the space between the ribbons.

Stitch side seam. Leave small opening near the top.

Gather the bottom edge and sew to the base.

Cut black ribbon in half. Thread one piece through satin ribbon casings. Knot and trim ends of ribbon.

Starting in the opposite gap of the ribbon casing, thread the other piece of black ribbon through the casings.

Knot and trim ends of ribbon.

Place removable pin cushion in the base of your sewing bag.
