These pretty coordinates feature Kym Bowles’ FOLK GARDEN group, designed and sewn by Donie Mason. Follow Donie’s exact placement of colors and prints, or mix and match your own for another look. You can also join three or more placemat blocks to create a matching table runner. The Serving Baskets tie at the sides for use, and untie to be stored flat. Dress up your breakfast nook, eat-in kitchen, or patio with Folk Garden.

Place B square on the left matching up you corners and sew diagonally point to point to the center as shown above press in place before repeating this step on the right side. Sew 4 of these units for 1 block. Assemble the remainder of the block as shown:

Row #2 Row #2
Row #3 Row #3
The completed block should measure 12 ½”. Add to each side of your block a strip that is cut 3” x 12 ½”. The top is complete. Measure again, and cut backing fabric and batting to this size. Layer the top, batting and backing, then quilt and bind using your favorite method.

Side-Tie Basket
YOU’LL NEED:
R22 FOLK GARDEN:
Cutting Guide:
  • Cut (1) center square, 8-1/2”
  • Cut (4) corner squares, 2-1/2”
  • Cut (4) middle sections, 2-1/2” x 8-1/2”
  • Cut (8) ribbon strips, 12” long
  • Cut (1) batting square, 12-1/2”
  • Cut (1) backing square, 8”
  • Cut backing fabric square, 12-1/2”
Sew block together as you would any standard nine patch. Place the backing fabric wrong side up. Then place the large batting square on top of it. Next, center the smaller batting square on top of the larger one. Finally, place the piece block right side up on top of the other layers. Quilt as desired; note that the more the piece is quilted, the firmer the bottom of the basket will be. To make the side ties, sew one ribbon at each of your 2½” square seams. Bind the block using your favorite method. To form the basket, bring corners up Tie the ribbons into bows at each corner to make your basket.

Donie’s Tip: These make great cozies for an 8 x 8 x 2” Pyrex dish. (Adjust this pattern for any other size Pyrex-type dish by measuring the dish, then creating the block to this size. Resize the small batting \piece to this size as well, and cut the larger batting and backing fabric 2” wider all around.
