Sue Pickering's original design, "Frugal Yankee Stew"
is an easy beginner quilt design is made using the beautiful wide
paisley stripe as the focus of this quick quilt. Her instructions
are for a lap-size quilt.
You'll Need:
2 yards of a wide paisley stripe
3/4-yard wide paisley (for optional bias binding)
14 (or more) assorted printed fat 1/8's
1/4 yard light for inner border
2-1/2 yards for backing
Assembly:
Cut four 1-1/2" by 22" strips from
each of your printed fat 1/8ths.
Sew strip sets of four fabrics each using an
accurate 1/4" seam allowance. You will need a total of
eighteen strip sets. Press from the front of your strip sets. Be
sure the seams are flat and have no pleats. The seams can be
iron up or down since they don't join other seams.
Re-cut the strip sets into 4-1/2"
segments. You will need a total of 70 segments.
Sew 14 segments together to make a long
vertical row. You will need 5 vertical rows. If you have cut and
sewn accurately your rows should measure 56-1/2" long by
4-1/2" wide. Now is the time to make them the same length.
From the wide paisley stripe cut four sections
of the serpentine design and five sections of the paisley
design. They should each be about 3-1/2" to 4-1/2"
wide and the length of the pieced vertical rows (56-1/2".)
Join the rows together as pictured.
From your light 1/4 yard cut five 1-1/2"
strips for the inner border. The side borders will have to be
pieced to be the correct length. Now measure the width of your
quilt top and cut the final top and bottom inner border strips.
Sew them on and do the same process with the paisley medallion
printed strips for your outside borders.
This project is quilted in the ditch of the
vertical rows. The binding is made up of leftover strip set
pieces. (Not easy for a beginner.) An easier binding would be to
use the wide paisley stripe cut on the bias for your binding.
You would need about 3/4's of a yard to make bias binding. The
finished size is approximately 64" X 44".
