We loved Donie Mason’s use of AUNT GRACE
SCRAPBAG 2005 for this fun little quilt, entitled Grandma’s Crazy
Quarters. Its circular motion and light, airy feel make it a wonderful
gift for the holidays, or any time of year. Donie notes that if you’d
like to include other Aunt Grace scraps, they should be at least 4”
square.

- Light/Med 1/4 yard of at least 7 different
fabrics
- Med/Dark 1/4 yard of at least 7 different fabrics
- Light Background 1-1/4 yard
- Backing 3 yards
- Binding 1/2 yard
- Template Plastic
- Batting

Cutting Guide: |
Light/Med: 2 - 4” strips from all fabrics
then crosscut these strips into 4” (total of 96 squares)
Med/Dark: 2 - 4” strips from all fabrics then crosscut these strips into
4” (total of 96 squares)
Light Background: 42” square
Binding: 5 - 2 1/4” strips |
Quilt Assembly: |
- On 70 of the light/medium 4” squares, draw a line
on the diagonal from corner to corner, then draw another line 1/2”
from the line just drawn, on either the left or right side of center.
These lines are your stitching lines (Diagram 1)
- With right sides together, pair up the marked
light/medium squares with 70 medium/dark 4” squares; sew on the
drawn corner-to-corner lines. (Donie’s note: “I like to chain
stitch so I will start with the corner-to-corner line and chain all 35
together, then turn and stitch down the other line.”) Cut apart
between the 2 lines sewn. Press to the darker of the 2 half-square
triangle blocks (Diagram 2).

- Again, draw a line on the diagonal from corner to
corner and another line 1/4” to the left or right of the center line
(Diagram 3), this time, using 35 of the 4” half-squares, and 35 of
the 3-1/4” half-squares. With right sides together, stitch down both
lines and cut between the two lines sewn. Press. The crazy quarter
blocks are now ready for assembly (Diagram 4.)

- Set aside the largest block; it should still measure
4”. There should be 70 – 3-1/4” crazy quarters. Square-up 35 of
these and set aside the other 35. Then square up the 35 smallest
blocks to 2 1/2” squares. Once done the crazy quarters become
crazier. Center the 3 1/4” over the 4” square; sew in place. Also
center the 2 1/2” square over the 3” square and sew in place. Take
these 2 units and center and sew together, forming a building block
tower as shown in Diagram 5. Press all seams in 1 direction, with half
of the block sets going up and half going down. On one unit, you might
want to press the seam open.

- Mark template plastic as follows to create the wedge
template: through the center, measure approximately 11-1/4” long. At
the top of the set make two marks 4” apart then make a mark in the
center. Draw a line from the center mark to the bottom of the sheet.
Measure 1” on each side of your drawn center line. Line up your
ruler and the outer marks on the top and the bottom outer marks and
cut. (Donie’s note: “I used the quarter-inch tape to mark the edge
of my wedge so that when she lined it up on the blocks I could see it
though the ruler.”) When lining up template on the block stack unit,
be sure that the template center line runs though the center of the
blocks; trim away on each side of the wedge. Seam your wedges together
with 1/4” seam allowance. You can do this in 4 pieces with 9 wedges
in three of the four units and 8 in the last unit.
- Center the completed wedge unit over the background
fabric square and tack it down with fabric glue or pins. Buttonhole
stitch in place around the inner circle and the outer circle.
- To add interest to the large open center section, add
a 9 1/2” hexagon crazy patched center, using up any left over
quarter square blocks on hand.
(Donie’s note: “Since it still was not crazy enough
for me, I added the 4” squares for the outer border of the quilt -- to
do this, seam together 12 of the 4” squares for the each side of the top
and 14 each for the top and bottom. Quilt and bind as desired. |
