MINI-BRAIDS
Finished Size 15 1/2" x 17 3/4" (approx.)

You'll Need:
  • Fat eighths of 12 different fabrics (10 for strips, 1 for triangles, 1 for squares)
  • Fat quarter for the borders and bindings
  • Fat quarter for the backing
  • 17" x 21" piece of batting

Cutting Guide (All include 1/4" seam allowance)
  • From each of 10 different fabrics Cut 4: 1 1/2" x 6" rectangles
  • From 1 fabric Cut 2: 7" squares in quarters diagonally to yield 8 large triangles. You will use 5.
  • From 1 fabric Cut 20: 1 1/2" squares
  • From the border fabric Cut (4) 17" strips
  • From the binding fabric Cut 4: 1 1/4" x 18" strips
Instructions
  • Stitch a l 1/2" square to the short end of a l 1/2" x 6" rectangles to create a pieced strip. Do this for two of each of the 10 different fabrics.
  • Join a 1 1/2" x 6" rectangle to the right side of a large triangle, maintaining the line of the triangle. The opposite short end will extend. We will trim that later.
  • Join a matching fabric pieced strip to the other side of the triangle with the square at the top, forming a diamond on the tip of the triangle.
  • Continue joining rectangles to the right side and matching pieced strips to the left side. Repeat until you have the 10 fabrics attached forming the braid.
  • Make a second braid in the same manner and in the same fabric order.
  • Trim the uneven ends off the braid by laying a ruler along the strip.
  • Stitch the two trimmed braid strips together matching the fabrics and seams.
  • Set-in a large triangle between the braid strips at the top of the quilt.
  • Trim the quilt top and bottom to make the quilt measure approximately 14 3/4" x 15 1/2". (I trimmed the last square in half plus the 1/4" seam allowance and squared the corners of the quilt.)
  • Stitch a 17" border strip to each long side of the quilt. Trim to fit.
  • Stitch a 17" border strip to the remaining sides of the quilt. Trim to fit.
  • Layer the quilt backing, wrong side up; batting; quilt top, right side up.
  • Quilt. Bind using the 1 1/4" strips.
  • Sign and date your quilt.

DIAMONDS
Finished Size: 15 1/2" x 21"
Block Size: 4" square
These "twin quilts" use the same block and setting, but they differ in (1) the color of the center squares, corner and setting triangles are different fabrics and (2) the way the border strips are cut from border fabric is different.

Directions are for each quilt with options for the border presentation.

You'll Need: (Based on 44" wide fabric)
  • Fat eighth of a dark, for the blocks
  • Fat eighth of light, for the blocks
  • Fat eighth for the corner, setting triangles and center square
  • Fat eighth for the binding
  • Fat eighth for the straight border OR 1/8 yard for the mitered border
  • Fat quarter for the backing
  • 18" x 24" piece of thin batting
Cutting Guide (All include 1/4" seam allowance)
For six blocks
  • Cut 24: 1 1/2" squares, dark
  • Cut 6: 2 1/2" squares, dark
  • Cut 24: 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangles, light
For the center square, corner and setting triangles
  • Cut 2: 4 1/2" squares, for the center squares
  • Cut 2: 4" squares in half diagonally for the corner triangles
  • Cut 2: 7" squares in quarters diagonally to yield 8 triangles. You will use 6.
For the straight blue border
  • Cut 2: 2 1/2" x 17 1/2" strips, across the pattern. Refer to the photo.
  • Cut 2: 2 1/2" x 16" strips, across the pattern
OR
For the mitered border

Lay your clear ruler over the stripes in the border print. Decide on the design you want to show, then center your ruler over the design adding 1/4" on each long side of the design for a seam allowance. (My design was approximately 1 3/4" wide so I cut the strips 2 1/4" wide.) Cut 4 identical strips making two 24" long and two 20" long.

For the binding: Cut 4: 1 1/4" x 18" strips

CONSTRUCTION
  • Stitch a 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangle between two 1 1/2" squares. Press the seam toward the dark fabric. Make 12. Label the pieced strips A.
  • Stitch a 2 1/2" dark square between two 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangles. Press the seam toward the dark fabric. Make 6 pieced centers.
  • Stitch each pieced center between "A" pieced strips to complete the block. Make 6 blocks.
  • Refer to the photo and lay out the blocks on point. Place the 4 1/2" center squares between the blocks. Place the setting and corner triangles around the quilt.
  • Stitch the quilt top together in diagonal rows. Join the rows.
BORDER

Straight border
  • Stitch the 2 1/2" x 17 1/2" blue strips to opposite long sides of the quilt top.
  • Stitch the 2 1/2" x 16" blue strips to the remaining sides of the quilt top.
Mitered border
  • Stitch the 24" strips to opposite long sides of the quilt top. Center the strip on the quilt and start and stop stitching 1/4" from the beginning and ending raw edges.
  • Stitch the 20" strips to the remaining sides of the quilt top. Center the strip on the quilt. Start and stop stitching 1/4" from the beginning and ending of the raw edges.
  • Lay the quilt top flat and smooth the border strips out for one corner, laying one extension over the other.
  • Fold each end back until they form a smooth miter. Press. Stitch along the pressed fold line. Trim. Repeat for each corner.
FINISHING
  • Layer the quilt backing, wrong side up; batting; quilt top, right side up.
  • Quilt. Bind using the 1/ 1/4" strips.
  • Sign and date your quilt.
