Mocha Meringue Quilt
by Jean Ann Wright

We love Jean Ann Wright's design for its easy construction and for the way it showcases the large scale florals of MOCHA MERINGUE. Shades of tan, taupe and brown are more popular than ever; stitch up the prettiest neutrals of the season with style & sophistication.

Backing 3 yd Fabric B, cut (1) 70" length, then cut remaining fabric into two pieces 22" x 36". Sew the two cut pieces into one long strip, then sew to side of 70" piece to make backing. Trim to 60" x 70".

Block Assembly:

  1. Shadow Box blocks: Using 2 matching 6-1/2" strips, sew one strip to each side of a 6-1/2" center square. Using 2 matching 10-1/2" strips, sew one strip to the top and bottom of the center square unit to complete the block. Make 11 blocks using fabrics as indicated in the quilt diagram.
  2. Window blocks: Sew a matching 2-1/2" square to each side of the center square. Sew a matching 6-1/2" to the top and bottom of the center square. Using a contrasting fabric sew a matching 6-1/2" strip to each side of the center square, then a matching 10-1/2" strip to the top and bottom of the center unit to complete the block. Make 3 blocks using fabrics as indicated in the quilt diagram.
  3. Patience Corner blocks: Pin an 8-1/2" strip to one side of a 6-1/2" square lining up one end of the strip even with one end of the square. Sew within 1" of the end and leave the remaining of the strip hanging loose. Sew the second 8-1/2" strip in place along the side of the center square that is stitched to the end. Sew the third and fourth strips in the same manner, then sew the loose end of the first strip out to the end of the fourth strip to complete the block. Make 6 blocks using fabrics as indicated in the quilt diagram.

Quilt Assembly:
  1. The quilt is sewn together in 5 rows of 4 blocks each. Refer to the quilt diagram to place your blocks in sequence. When the rows are complete sew them together to complete the center of the quilt top.
  2. Sew the long fabric W borders to opposite sides of the quilt top. Sew the short fabric W borders to the top and bottom of the quilt top.
  3. The fabric C borders have mitered corners. Fold each of the border strips end-to-end and press the center fold line. Fold each of the corners of the four border strips from the bottom corner to the top edge at a 45° angle and press the fold line to mark your sewing line for the miter at each end of the border strip. Pin one strip with the center fold line to the center of one side of the quilt.
  4. Pin the corner 45° angle fold line 1/4" in from each of end of the quilt top. Add pins along the border strip evenly distributing the border and quilt top (you may need to ease the border strip or the quilt top for a perfect fit). Sew the border strip in place from outside pin to outside pin. Do not sew all the way to the end of the quilt top. Sew the remaining three border strips in the same manner. Match the 45° fold lines at each corner and sew on the fold line. Trim away excess fabric.

Finishing:
  1. Layer the quilt top, batting and backing. Quilt the layers together.
  2. Fold the binding in half lengthwise and sew raw edges of binding to raw edges of quilt top. Turn folded edge to back and sew in place.
