Pansy of Hope Tote Bag

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, quilter Laura Farson designed this beautiful and handy tote from our PANSY OF HOPE collection by Faye Burgos. The blend of pinks and greens makes it a seasonless favorite, during the month of October and all year ‘round.

  • 1/2-yard Dark Green ground ivy - cut two 3" wide width of fabric strips, and
    • two 6" x 7-1/2" rectangles (front pockets), and
    • one 1-1/2" width of fabric strip (accent stripe), and
    • one 1-1/2" wide width of fabric strip (lining inner upper edge)
  • 1/8-yard Pink butterfly print - cut two 6" x 7-1/2" rectangles (pockets), and
    • two 1-1/2" wide x 7" diagonally cut strips (ribbons and loop closure)
  • 1/2-yard fusible fleece - cut one 12-1/2" x 40" rectangle (main body), and
    • one 4" x 16" rectangle (bottom)
  • 1 Package wide double fold bias tape (seams)
  • Cotton cording (handles)
  • 1 shank button

Main Body
  1. With right sides out, layer the 13" x 41" large floral and ivy print rectangles on the fusible fleece and fuse forming the main body.
  2. Press the dark green ivy strip in half lengthwise. Press the small pink floral width of fabric strip in half lengthwise.
  3. With the raw edges matched, pin the dark green strip to the raw edge of the main body.
  4. Pin the pink floral strip on top of the dark green strip.
  5. Sew a 1/4" seam along the raw edge. Press the small print strip open.
Pockets
  1. On the front of the main body, working from left to right mark with pins or washable marker, 16-1/2", 4", and 16" - leaving 4-1/2" to the right edge.
  2. With right sides together, match a 6" x 7-1/2" dark green ivy rectangle with a pink butterfly print of the same size. Sew a 1/4" seam.
  3. Turn right side out. Press so a 1/4" pink strip shows along the seam. Repeat for the second pocket.
  4. Center each pocket on the 16" sections of the main body. Pin.
Handles
  1. Press the 3" wide dark green ivy strips in half lengthwise. Fold the raw edges in to the fold, again lengthwise and press.
  2. Place the handle strips over the vertical raw edges of the front pockets, taking care not to twist the loose parts and pin in place.
  3. Sew along both folded edges of the handles, just to the top edge of main body.
  4. Insert the cording between the folds of the open areas of the handles.
  5. Stitch along both edges to encase the cord.
Side Pockets
  1. With right sides together, form side pockets by folding the 4-1/2" x 16" small floral rectangles in half (4-1/2" x 8"). Sew along the two long sides. Turn right side out. Press.
  2. Place the pocket with the fold edge to the top and the raw edge along the bottom edge on the 4" sections of the main body.
  3. Topstitch along the long sides, leaving the bottom raw edge unsewn.
Bottom
  1. With right sides out, layer the 4-1/2" x 16" small floral rectangles around the 4" x 16" fusible fleece rectangle. Fuse.
  2. Zigzag stitch or serge the raw edges.
  3. With a 1/4" seam allowance, match the 4" section of lower raw edge of the main body to the 4-1/2" section of the bottom rectangle. Sew to each corner, put your needle down and pivot. Continue along all four sides.
  4. Fold wide bias tape over the raw edges of the bottom seam. Sew in place.
  5. Match the right sides of the main body together to form the side seam. Pin and stitch.
  6. Encase the raw edge of the side seam with wide bias tape.
Top facing
  1. Fold and press a 1/4" seam allowance lengthwise on both raw edges of the 1-1/2" wide dark ivy strip.
  2. Pin the strip at the inside top edge of the main body, covering the seam edges of the top small flower print strip.
  3. Sew along both edges to form a facing.
Pink Ribbons and closure
  1. With right sides together, sew the pink butterfly strips lengthwise with a narrow seam allowance.
  2. Turn right side out. Trim the edges even and cut into two 7" strips and one 3" strip.
  3. Form the pink ribbons by folding the bias strips in half leaving a bow at the top. Pin and hand stitch onto each pocket.
  4. Fold the 3" strip in half and pin to the inside center of one top edge of the main body. Bar tack in place. Sew the shank button to the opposite side of the main body.
