Pieced Pillow Cases

Design by Brandy B
Instructions by Lisa Shepard Stewart

Recreate Brandy’s easy pieced pillowcases print-for-print, or choose your own favorite combination of SIENNA prints for this pretty bedroom mini-makeover! For the tops, simply cut strips are joined together to create a “Cottage Chic” look that blends as well with denim as it would with lace or eyelet. Then choose your favorite Sienna print to back the pillowcases. Pair it with a season-spanning cheater quilt sewn up of the unique patchwork pattern, a mix of Sienna prints, yarn dyes and pintuck fabrics.

Pieced Pillow Cases

YOU’LL NEED: (for a pair of standard pillowcases)
¼ yard each of 7 SIENNA prints
1½ yard pillowcase trim & backing (stripe)

Seam allowances are ¼” unless otherwise noted.

Pieced Pillow Fronts:
  1. Cut each ¼ yard into two 4½” strips, across the width of the fabric. Stack all strips, right sides up, and trim the top of the strips to create a 60-degree angle at one end, as shown (fig. 1).
  2. Place two strips, right sides together as shown, and join them with a 1/4” seam. Add third strip to the second in the same manner, and continue until all 7 strips are joined. The upper edge will form a bias line, the lower edge will be uneven. Trim lower edge (from Point B to Point D) as shown (fig. 2). Press seams to one side.

  1. With right sides together, bring Point A to meet Point B, and Point C to meet Point D. matching previous seams. Pin. Sew the diagonal seam from AB to CD, forming a tube of fabric. Trim seam and press open. Cut tube open to create the diagonally pieced fabric. Cut fabric in half for the two pillowcase tops and square up to measure 21” x 31” (standard pillowcase)
  1. From the stripe, cut two pillowcase backs the same size as the fronts. Sew back to front at both long sides and one short side., using a ½” seam allowance. Turn to right side and press.

  1. Cut two pillowcase borders, 9” wide x 42" long. Fold border in half lengthwise, wrong sides together and press. Sew short sides of border together and sew, using a ½” seam allowance. With right sides together, pin border to pillowcase, matching raw edges. Sew, using a ½” seam allowance. Press seam toward pillowcase.
  2.  Quilt and bind as desired.
