Aunt Grace Quilted Duvet Cover
|

One of the great things about 110”
quilt backings is that they don’t necessarily have to be on the back
of the quilt! We loved Laura Farson’s use of the newest backing, a
Grandmother’s Flower Garden pattern done in Aunt Grace prints, for her
easy and versatile duvet cover. With its lightly quilted top, this duvet
cover does “double duty”. In summer use it empty as a light cotton
quilt. When the winter winds blow and the temperature drops, stuff it with
your goose down comforter and snuggle under its warmth! Instructions below
are for a Twin size, with adjustments for Queen/King sizes at the end. |
| NOTE: Seam allowances are ½" unless
otherwise noted. All seams are finger-pressed instead of ironed. Thermal
fleece will melt with heat. |
You’ll Need (for Twin Size 64” x 89”)
- 2 Yards 110” wide Grandmother’s Flower Garden for
the top
- One Aunt Grace Quilt Back 110” x 3-1/4 yard for
backing
- 2-1/4 yards 90” wide White Muslin for the lining
- 1 Twin Size Light Polyester Batting
- 10 yards each Green, Pink, and Yellow satin ribbon
for the ties (1/8” wide)
- One large eye needle for ribbon
|
Assembly |
- Cut the flower garden top and the muslin lining to
measure 58” x 90”.
- With the right sides out, layer the batting evenly
between the top and lining fabric layers. Pin the layers together with
quilting safety pins.
- Sew the silk ribbon into the center of each flower
garden motif.
Laura’s Hint: Rotate the ribbon colors by diagonal
row. Cut the ribbon the length of the diagonal row leaving a 2” tail at
each end. Sew the ribbon in a running stitch between each motif. Use
pliers to pull the ribbon through the layers. Cut the ribbons in the
center between the motifs. Tie double square knots in each ribbon tie.
Trim to desired length.
- Trim the batting and fabric layer edges evenly.
- Cut the backing fabric to measure 72” x 90”.
- With right sides together, match the side seams of
the backing to the quilted layer. Pin. Sew the side seams.
- Center the backing and quilted “sandwich” so the
backing forms an even border on both sides.
- Pin the upper raw edges together. Sew the seam.
- Pin the lower edges 15” from each side. Sew the
seam along the outsides of the lower edge, leaving a 34” center
opening.
- Trim the corners and turn right sides out. At the
center opening, press the seam allowance to the inside and turn under
the raw edges.
- Stitch seam allowance along the lower opening.
|
Ties |
- From the remaining backing fabric, Cut four 3” x
12-1/2” rectangles. (Cut six for Queen/King)
- With right sides together, fold a rectangle
lengthwise matching the raw edges. Pin.
- Stitch 1/4” along the raw edges leaving a 3” gap
in the center for turning.
- Trim the corners and turn right sides out. Press and
topstitch the opening closed.
- Repeat for the remaining 3 ties.
- Insert the ties into the bottom opening of the duvet,
placing them about 12” apart. Pin/
- Stitch two rows to secure. Fluff and Stuff!
