Village Scarlet
Warm reds are popular with traditionalists and contemporary
quilters alike, and we're sure this mix of prints from
STURBRIDGE VILLAGE SCARLET by Judie Rothermel would be welcome
year-round in almost any room setting. Joanne S. Nolt's
"Seeing Red" design utilizes a classic Drunkard's Path
curved block.

You'll Need: |
1/2
yard EACH of 5 dark reds (N452-161D; N449-161D; N457-161D;
N451-161D; N446-161D)
1/2 yard EACH of 5 light reds (N175-129D; N453-161D; N448-161D;
N456-161D; N447-161D)
1 yard dark red for the border (N459-161D), for the outer border
and binding
1/2 yard tan, for the inner border
3-3/4 yards backing fabric

Cutting Guide: |

Make full-size
templates of patter pieces A and B out of plastic or cardboard.
From each of the 5 darks and 5 lights: Cut (4) of Template A and
(4) of Template B
From each of 4 different darks: Cut (1), 4" square (for the
border cornerstones)
From tan: Cut (5), 1-3/4" x WOF (width of the fabric)
strips, for the inner border
From dark red: Cut (5), 4" x WOF strips, for the outer
border, AND cut (6), 2-1/2" x WOF strips, for the binding |
Construction: |

Pair 4 matching light A's with 4 matching dark B's. Stack
and set aside. Pair 4 matching light B's with 4 matching
dark A's. Stack and set aside. You will have 10 sets. You
need nine, so set your least favorite aside to use on the
back in your label.

To join the block, pair up one A and one B fabric. Lining
up the curved edges, place A on top of B with right sides
together. Place a pin at each end and at the center point,
adding a 4th and 5th pin between the center and each end
point.
- Stitch with B on the bottom and ease the curve of A in
place as you stitch.
- Repeat for the sets of matching fabric A and B pieces.
Complete all 4 identical blocks. Press and trim to measure
8-1/2" square.
- Stitch these four identical blocks into a 4-patch unit,
referring to the diagram provided. Be careful of the
placement of A and B disregarding the light or dark. DIAGRAM

- Repeat for a total of nine sets, making 4-patch units in
the same manner.
- Lay out the nine 4-patch units referring to the
photograph; adjust the position of the dark and light pieces
to get the desired overall pattern.
- Stitch the units into rows. Join the rows to complete the
quilt center.

Inner Border |
- Cut one of the 1-3/4" tan strips in quarters across
the width of the strip making four strips that measure
approximately 1-3/4" x 10-1/2".
- Sew a 1-3/4" x 10 ½" strip to a 1-3/4" x
WOF strip end to end.
- Repeat for all four strips. Making (4) pieced strips that
measure approximately 1-3/4" x 52".
- Cut (2) to measure 1-3/4" x 48-1/2" and Cut (2)
to measure 1-3/4" x 51".
- Stitch the 1-3/4" x 48-1/2" strips to opposite
sides of the quilt center.
- Stitch the 1-3/4" x 51" strips to the remaining
sides of the quilt center to complete the inner border.

Outer Border |
- Cut one of the 4" x WOF red strips in quarters across
the width of the strip making four strips that measure
approximately 4" x 10-1/2"
- Sew a 4" x 10-1/2" strip to a 4" x WOF
strip end to end.
- Repeat for all four strips, making four pieced strips that
measure approximately 4" x 52". Cut all four
strips to measure 4" x 51".
- Stitch a 4" x 51" strip to opposite sides of the
quilt.
- Stitch a 4" dark square to each end of the remaining
two 4" x 51" border strips.
- Stitch the new pieced strips to the remaining sides of the
quilt to complete the outer border. Press.

| Layer
the back (right side down), batting and top. Baste, then quilt.
Bind using the 2-1/2" strips stitched end to end. Sign and
date the back, using your left over block for a label. |
