Hats
‘n’ Heels “Star Quality” Quilt
Recreate this HATS
‘n’ HEELS quilt, a classic design by Carm Johnson. She
cleverly mixes in coordinating colors of our SHIMMER
cotton/nylon lame’, and red and purple hand-dyes from our COLOR
WORKS collection. The finished size is 65”x 65”, but with
versatile 9” blocks, you can easily adjust the size to your own
needs. |

- 1-7/8 yd. hat print G516 (blocks and border)
- ¾ yd. shoe & handbag print G517
- 1 yd. check G520 (border and binding)
- W52 COLOR WORKS hand-dyes

- W01 SHIMMER cotton/nylon lame’

| Cutting Instructions |
- From each floral cut:
- 1 strip 4-1/4” wide.
- Cut each strip into 9- 4 1/4” squares.
Then cut each square into quarters diagonally to get 36
quarter-square triangles. Diagram 1
- From each floral also cut 2-3 7/8” strip.
Cut each strip into to 18-3 7/8” squares. Cut diagonally
to form half-square triangles. Diagram 2
- From each SHIMMER cotton/nylon lame’ fabric
cut:
- 4-3 7/8” strips. Cut each strip into 36-3
7/8” squares cut diagonally to form half square triangles.

- From each COLOR WORKS hand-dye fabric, cut:
- 4 - 4 ¼” strips. Sub cut into 36 4 ¼”
squares. Cut each square in quarters diagonally Diagram 1

- From shoes and purses fabric cut:
- 18 - 4 ¾” squares, fussy cut to center
individual shoe and purse designs
- From hats fabric cut:
- 18 - 4 ¾” squares, fussy cut to center
individual hat designs
- 2 4 ½ x 57 ½” outer border pieces
- 2 4 ½ x 65 1/2” outer border pieces.
- From check fabric cut:
- 2- 2x54 ½” inner border pieces
- 2- 2x57 ½ “ inner border pieces

| Block Assembly |
- Pairing violet Shimmer fabric with pink floral,
and pink Shimmer with the violet floral, sew each half square
triangle to form square block units (Unit A). Diagram 3.
- Pairing quarter triangles of violet floral with
red Color Works, and pink floral with purple Color Works, sew
one straight edge of triangle together to form triangle (Unit
B). Make 18 units with the floral on the right side and 18 with
the floral on the left side from each floral/Color Works
combination. Diagram 4
- Sew the Color Works sides of each Unit B to the
floral sides of 18 the Unit A’s in each floral forming Unit
AB. Diagram 5.
- Sew the remaining Color Works triangles to the
floral sides of the remaining half square triangles as shown in
Diagram 6. (Unit C)
- Sew the unit C segments to the fussy cut center
block, matching colors. Sew the Unit AB blocks to the remaining
sides to complete the blocks. Diagram 7.
- Make 36 blocks, 9 of each floral combination.
Lay out blocks in 6 horizontal rows with 6 blocks in each row.
Alternate purple and red stars.
- Join block in each row. Join rows. Stitch 2”x54
1/2 “ inner borders to quilt sides. Stitch 2”x 57 ½”inner
borders to top and bottom of quilt. Assemble outer border in
same manner.
- Layer backing, batting, and quilt top.
Baste. Quilt as desired ** Make 7 ½ yards of continuous bias
binding from remaining checked fabric. Bind quilt edges.

| ** Designer’s Note: This quilt was machine
quilted using the stitch-in-the-ditch technique around the stars.
The hats, purses and shoes in the center of the blocks were
outlined. A floral motif was added to the square formed by the
shimmers meeting at the corners of each blocks. The hats in the
border were also loosely outlined. |
