SUZI SMITH

Suzi is a traditional Virginia-based hand piecer and quilter. I think it is an inherent! My great-grandmother, and namesake whom I never knew, was an accomplished quilter, something I only learned 20 years ago when a distant family member shared her quilts with me.

Suzi s quilting journey began with the encouragement of her sister-in-law, who wanted to take a beginner quilt class and convinced Suzi to take the class with her. She never quilted again, but I was hooked!

Suzi spent ten years running a quilting program for a National Trust property, Belle Grove Plantation, in Middletown, VA.  Her duties included teaching, purchasing for the quilt shop, curating exhibits, and developing A Century of Quiltmaking, a conference that introduced Suzi to many amazing quilters.

After curating a Shenandoah Valley quilt exhibit for the New England Quilt Museum, I started thinking, Why don't we have a quilt museum in Virginia?'   That thought ignited a spark that led to the creation of the Virginia Quilt Museum.  While I maintain only a small role in the creation of the VQM, I was privileged to play a role in the acquisition of the first quilts in the museum's permanent collection.

Life changes led Suzi away from the quilting industry as a profession, but my love of quilts and quiltmaking never waned. I have never considered myself a collector, merely an admirer and blessed caretaker of others who no doubt found the same joy in quiltmaking that I do.

MIDDLEBORO ROAD is Suzi s debut collection for Marcus Fabrics, a pretty mix of florals and coordinates in soft blues and butter yellows.
